Has anyone been to Andamooka lately?
In particular, I'm interested in the serviceability of the strip. When I was there some years back it was a horror dirt runway because of the rocks on the strip.
It probably hasn't improved, but I thought I'd ask - my local aero club is organising a fly-away and they're planning to spend 2 (yes two!) nights at Andamooka.

It was some years back when I was there, but yes, the strip is a little rough, but not too bad. Some advice, when parking your aircraft, make sure you at least grab the concrete pad if you can. When I was there, on the way to Birdsville (early Sep), there was unforecast and unseasonal heavy rain during that night and the main street was flooded (see attached pictures).
The whole strip turned into a layer of slimy, oozing mud and had to wait many hours for the sun and breeze to dry it out sufficiently for a tail wagging and mud flying take off. To save weight, I had to leave my two passengers behind on the ground to be driven by car to the nearby Olympic Dam strip where I picked them up and we eventually went on to Birdsville, just in time to miss the main race, but not the naked, bare-back camel riding we witnessed and a meet up with Chris Wrightson.

G'day Peter,
I just rang my mate in Olympic Dam. He owns a C172 and a Saratoga, and says he wouldn't take either into Andamooka. Let alone a Mooney. Too rough and they have had a heap of rain just recently. Better to land at Olympic Dam and hire a minibus from Gaye at Budget (20mins drive away), or stay at Roxby Downs. Fuel is also available at YOLD.

Hi Peter,
Bit dodgy, mate. It'll just take a 380, so it might be a bit short for you.
Cheers,
Tony
